Welcome to the Psychedelic Blog. I write about the Impact of Psychedelics on Grieving, Relationships, Culture, and Death. This week, I’m diving into the concept of “ego death”—what it is, how it can transform our understanding of self, and why it matters.
I had my Ego Death experience on a plane two weeks after my first Ayahuasca experience. I promise I was sober. Funny, isn't it?
I've been reflecting on my own perception of Ego, and I found your article inspiring. It was interesting to read about your view on the pros and cons and how the Ego serves us with the proper integration.
Ego plays a vital role in our lives. It drives us to earn a living, provide for our loved ones, and even things like competing in recreational sports to stay in shape.
But, like most things, it can be overdone. Behind every truly unhappy person is someone trapped by their ego—seeing people as games to be won, unable to find joy in the mundane, always chasing what’s next.
As usual, useful words to help novice and long term practitioners understand the practical nature of these "mystical experiences". It's almost like you ARE me? 😉
Wood loving Psilocybe species like P.Azurescens or P.Cyanescens used in moderate doses, will absolutely achieve “ego death” (2-4grams) thats actually a fairly high dose.. Many I know who have used these WLP species have reached autonomic responses from far lower mg doses. The response reaction MUST be considered & anticipated for successful navigation of the experience..It involves all the key characteristics of a poisoning response; profuse sweating, high heart rate, increased blood pressure, 8-9mm pupil dilation. It will pass yet when you are in timeless spaces you have no reference points that will “help”…tricky space when time stops.
So the lesson here is to be VERY WELL INFORMED prior to any use of said tools(WLPS)
4grams of P.Cubensis, any strain, is not even within the same ballpark to Wood Loving Psilocybe Saprophytes, its not even the same game! …that comparison is dangerous. 4grams of Psilocybe Azurescens for the uninformed uninitiated person often results in calls to 911.
This post really captures the essence of what it means to experience ego dissolution. The way you describe that moment of feeling "inseparable from the collective whole" is so vivid—it made me reflect on my own encounters with that sense of oneness. I also appreciate the way you blend science and spirituality, making complex concepts like the Default Mode Network and serotonin receptors more accessible. The idea that psychedelics help us rediscover a natural state of being, free from the ego’s constructs, is profound. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most transformative insights come when we let go of the boundaries we’ve created. Truly thought-provoking and beautifully articulated!
At last..! Someone sensible saying that the DMN is not in fact the optimum state. DMN is our lazy brain thinking along the same old pathways. Psychedelics shake it up

To comment on my using your article as an example of New Age Nonsense about Ego Death being of any significant significance. Facing ACTUAL PHYSICAL DEATH- in the Ancestral Underworld with courage and retuning with Joy knowing you only have one life on earth ever and KNOWING SELF SACRIFICE by using your talents to help other people is all that matters before you die.
It is not just you , but everyone PARROTING OLD WORN OUT SIXTIES BS ABOUT Ego Death- so childish and pathetic and silly.
Great take on Ego Death.

Agreed. 4 grams of any strain can induce ego death.
And absolutely—it’s imperative to be well-informed before journeying.
